MAN O MAN. yesterday was like the worst day ever. jesus. some highlights include a fuckload of work at work, a splitting headache that wouldn't go away all day, nearly hitting a car while merging on the freeway, and waiting at UPS for at least 30 minutes for no reason. yea it was just a BAD day. and then all i wanted to do was sleep but alex wouldn't let me sleep thru the night. i know he was trying to be helpful since i told him i had work to do but i was in that "i don't care" mindset cuz my head hurt so much and i was super tired from waking up 2 hrs earlier than usual to get my teeth cleaned. it was just a BAD day. but the good thing is it's over and now today is great so far. more relaxed and chill. no headache. looking forward to the weekend plans for alex's bday. all this good stuff. AND we booked our hotels in iceland. so we are one step closer. next is to book the excursions we want since getting around iceland is hard. in the winter it's very hard and in the summer it's just sorta hard. they don't really have trains and with all the snow and shit it's hard to manage. so we are booking day trips and shit. where they take u to the places. well at least for some of the days. not all the days. haven't figured out how new years works there but i've seen photos and it's pretty rad. i'll look into it more. and once we book all the excursions then we get to go shopping for warm clothes!! yay. it won't be super super cold but it will be cold. so we have to gear up. i can't wait!!

i couldn't resist.

ahhh...that hit the spot. just got my mini massage at work. good shit. i was feeling like i needed something like that. yes yes.

anyway, i think me and everyone around me is slowly dying.

exhibit A: ME - i was fine yesterday. then i ate this breaded chicken stuff. i've had it before. nice and tasty. but then my heart was feeling it. and i really felt the urge to go run or something to get the heart pumping. so before i left work i ran in place while doing jumping jacks for 5 minutes. then we got on our way to the glasshouse and i felt sick. queezy as hell. so i pulled over and went to the bathroom. but the rest of the night i felt off.

exhibit B: ALEX - the other day he ate some raw chicken accidentally and freaked out that he might have salmonella. and he still might. the incubation period is 12-72 hrs. so he's not free and clear yet.

exhibit C: LAUREL - she's been feeling sick for days. cause unknown. she could have a viral infection. or HIV. i mean google just doesn't know. haha no seriously though, she's probably got something mild but we can't figure it out. but she's not 100% and that's all that matters.

exhibit D: BYRON - yesterday he ate a slew of random food items and felt queezy at the show. we're pretty sure that's the cause but it's either that or the flu.

exhibit E: LAUREL'S ROOMMATE (for good measure) - she has a kidney infection. something i thought i had when my urine samples kept getting contaminated. luckily i didn't have that. but she does.

i'm convinced it's the water.

anyway so junior boys and tvotr. good shit. i didn't really like the junior boys album but man they were good live. so fucking good. chill but not as chill as the album. but now i am back to listening to the album again. give it a second chance. meanwhile tvotr at the glasshouse. amazing. so good. granted "wolf like me" was not as good at reading but overall the show was better. solid. they rocked out and thank god i had my earplugs. after the soulwax show that burned, it was good to listen somewhat guilt free. they played all the songs i could have hoped for so i was happy.

ok back to work. busy day.

09.25.2006

can i get a redo?

yea that's how i feel about this weekend. it wasn't bad bit it wasn't good either. it was all wack. i'd say the most comforting moments were seeing andrew for the first time since we broke up and alex and i coming to near resolution (it's so hard to plan shit in the winter there...) regarding what to do in iceland. let me start off with my new pet peeve....

PARKING LOTS

i hate then with a passion. not only did it NOT get to see science of sleep this friday because it was sold out, but while trying to exit the parking lot from 5 floors down, i sat in my car for AT LEAST 20 MINUTES. i mean what the fuck here people. what the fuck? that's uncalled for. and i refused to pay for the time i spent waiting. then on saturday i went to pasadena to go shopping with the girls and spent 40 FUCKING MINUTES in the parking lot looking for parking. i felt like michael douglas in falling down when he just starts shooting shit. yea i almost wanted to just start ramming cars to get out of my way. i mean god fucking hell.

anyway, aside from that, jen got into a car accident which is totally wack. i mean she's ok and all which is good but her car is a wreck she said. alex, james and i showed up too late apparently, to the show last nite and missed like 2 of tv on the radios songs. but get this. ok so it was gang gang band, tvotr, and massive attack. show started at 7:30. we got there at 8 and tvotr is already playing. what?!!?!? but the show also felt super condensed because ok. so did the opener play like 3 songs? wtf? furthermore, the stage people cut off tvotr's last song. WTF!!! they started playing. looked over. stopped playing. turned to the crowd and said "umm so they want us off the stage now. so i guess that's it. sorry. we're tv on the radio. goodnight." LAME. the crowd boo'd to no avail....then literally 15 min later massive attack's light show was on. i say this because i didn't feel like i was watching massive attack. i was watching their phenomenal light show. with some sound eminating from the black silhouettes of people. seriously. u couldnt see the people's faces. they bored me to death and we left at 9:15. i bet they were going to play for like 2 more hours. UGH! or maybe the show ended at 10pm. who knows. who cares.

anyway, i saw andrew sunday afternoon. FINALLY. it's been like 6.5 months. it was really good to see him. i mean shit, i thought we'd never find a time and then before u know it i'd be married. haha no. but seriously, it took forever to reconnect. i mean part of that was just not wanting to see each other due to the pain. the other part was him being busy. but we finally met up. i went to his house. it was SPOTLESS. so nuts. i mean he's neat and tidy. but this. this was insane. it looked like he hadn't been living there for days. which is sort of how his life is i suppose. with his travelling and all. but still. so clean. so tidy. i was in OCD heaven really. i mean i love my housemates and alex and all, but they aren't tidy people. so i mean, it's nice to see a ridiculously orderly place. he and i chatted for a bit. maybe an hour. he showed me some things. new things. i saw some of the gifts i had given him still out and about. that was good. i retrieved mr. bear! good ole loveable mr. bear was back in my possession. at first i felt sad. but i think i'm ok now. cuz the last time i saw mr. bear was when we broke up and i was playing with him. oh sad. i bought andrew's cd racks from him since he has the same ones as me and i need another one. the second i will give to alex. andrew never liked the racks so he can just get new ones. he doesn't have shitloads of cds anyway. it was very weird being there and talking to him though. because he's soooo different than alex. alex is really goofy and childlike at times. very emotionally there. andrew is stoic and sarcastic. emotionally distant. it's like night and day. and in the end a middle ground would be perfection i am convinced. though not really sure since i've never personally encountered that. but yea. my sarcasm was back in full force for that hour with andrew. good times. i hope that we can hang out occasionally. not be such strangers. we can't really be friends friends. i just can't see how that would work since we never were friends to begin with. we basically met and started dating immediately. but yea. i hope our in-person interactions are less infrequent. but we shall see.

tonight, junior boys at the troub. if pitchfork's review holds true, those mofos won't take the stage til 2 hrs after the opener. and i'll shit a brick.

09.22.2006

i'm tired and i want to go home....

i had some rice pudding at work today. it was LOVELY. have i ever expressed how much i love rice pudding? because if i haven't, i will now. i LOVE IT. rice pudding, tapioca pudding, and rice custard. all 3 of them remind me of my childhood and my grandma making them for me. of course none can ever live up to the memory of grandma's but they can try. and today the pudding i had was fairly good. but by no means handmade.

tonight alex and i are going on a "double date" with his couple friends will and dawn. i like them. will is pretty soft spoken but seems nice enough. dawn is really nice and is actually a fellow trojan. only she's there for grad school. but hey, i'll take what i can get. haha we are gonna have dinner and then see science of sleep, the new michel gondry movie i've hyped up about as much as i hyped up eternal sunshine. i hope it doesn't disappoint. i mean i'm really hoping this is one for the dvd collection. cuz it looks damn good. so cute....

i just bought my tickets to see tv on the radio at the glasshouse on tuesday. for some reason no one wants see them so it's not sold out. i am also seeing them at the hollywood bowl cuz alex and i bought the tickets way back when we didn't know of any glasshouse show. now i sorta wish we hadn't bought those tickets. but oh well. massive attack is playing with them at the bowl and i hear they are good. so that's something. the glasshouse show will be much more like reading fest. ie, FUCKING AWESOME. at least i hope. alex is convinced they will play a secret show this weekend. personally i dont need to see them 3 times in 4 days. thats overkill. they aren't radiohead. haha

tomorrow i'm going with the girls to have lunch and paruse the newly-opened H&M in pasadena. the first in the LA region. we are stoked. i am personally a bit H&M'd out from spain but nevertheless, i am excited for the overall idea of it being here. just another outlet for cheap clothing. woo!

09.19.2006

poo. i just realized that robbie williams (yes, robbie williams) is playng two shows in mexico next month. and if i had realized this sooner (ie, when the tickets went on sale) i probably would have bought a ticket to go and flown down there for a weekend. i shit u not. but now the tickets are $400+ each. yes, $400+ each. robbie is an international superstar (except not in the US) and his tickets scalp for so much. it's insane. so i guess that idea is out. damn the man. damn the fucking man.

09.14.2006

so i just about finished up working on this cd package that if you knew the artist you'd laugh your ass off about it. hmm...let's just say i'm pretty sure the popo have caught him for doing something reckless and stupid at least once or twice. and it was probably something similar to an old batman episode where it's supposed to be all serious but then they throw in those zing! bap! zao! graphics which means you can't take it seriously at all. don't even ask how i got on this project. it's not a funny story but i do think it's funny that i am credited in the liner notes. oh man i can't wait to see the finished product. or hear it for that matter.

this is what the last night of reading looks like (i finally got photos from dave):

1st row - left: man down man down
1st row - right: nothing like a little twister action (while drunk)
2nd row - left: dave in the bottom right corner next to flash himself. a prime example of the superhero costume thing we saw a lot of.
2nd row - right: liv kissing a weak sauce superman
3rd row - left: what you don't see is what happened btwn brideman and liv after this photo was taken ;)
3rd row - right: might as well use those empty carling cans for something...
4th row - left: how they managed to get that big ass tampoline in the campgrounds i will never know
4th row - right: when it starts to rain, just turn your gazebo awning into a movable one and walk around with it so you are always covered

09.13.2006

back to the grind. the usual blog posting that is. today there was no hot water at alex's. so i just didn't shower. i was too tired to be using cold water for my shower. blah. alex and i also had a fight of sorts regarding travel plans. it seems as tho he just isn't as hardcore as i am. i guess. i'm willing to do nearly anything to get to where i want. aside from high cost. and he just isn't. blah.

new music tuesday! new JT, new TVOTR, and new rapture. ALL good. get them now!!!

so today we were doing the usual stream of consciousness out loud speaking and it went sort of like this.

byron: i think we should have inverted wetsuits where the water is inside to keep cool.
me: no no no. then you'll get all pruney. that's no good. what about your room filled with water idea?
byron: yes yes, just one big wading pool.
me: yea where you can all share the cold water. everyone's feet in one pool of water.
byron: that's right!
me: oh how about a wetsuit with ice in it?
laurel: NO! you'll get frostbite!
me: ok ok. what about a suit that has water in the lining so that the water doesn't actually touch your skin and you won't get pruney?
byron: even better yet. an underwater tank where you have one of those tube things like paraplegic's have to do things. so the tube would move your mouse.
laurel (while laughing): an underwater tank where you have a tube like paraplegic's?!

and then we all turned away and resumed work. yes, this is what we do all day i swear...

and then....

my boss and laurel began throwing a cherry tomato back and forth to see if they could get it into each other's mouths. but they failed every time and just kept catching it or having it hit them in the chest. moving their heads around like dogs trying to catch the ball on their hind legs. no success.

09.08.2006

nearly 2 wks after my vacation and i'm FINALLY getting over my sickness. this is madness. i think my illness, which started as a casual cold from walking around in the rain, turned into this monster cold due to flying while sick and my mucus getting all out of hand and making it worse than it really should have been. nevertheless, reading was worth every minute. and now i shall recount THE ROAD TO READING AND BACK.

the road to reading was hard. VERY HARD. it started off back in april when we couldn't get tickets through the official website selling tickets because the damn festival sold out in an hour. this is partially due to glastonbury not be on this year and so everyone in the UK was burning to go to reading. but we perservered and decided to ebay it purchasing from a lovely girl named jodie who promised to send the tickets asap once she received them. but once the tickets weren't coming by the time she left for her holiday, we were in a bind. so she bought us new tickets from this guy who said he had them in hand and had a 99.7% rating on ebay. well that fucker never sent them or sent them too late. regardless they didn't come before she left for her holiday so stacey and i had to scramble. luckily i found this craigslist type website where people were selling tickets in hand ready to meet up in london. so i called in a huge favor to andrew's friend matt who now lives in the UK and he met up with this american girl stephanie who had two tickets. so while stacey and i were in spain we monitored their trade off and once we knew matt had the tickets in hand we were set. but then there was the nasty problem of RAIN occuring all 3 days of the festival. for some reason stacey and i thought an umbrella would suffice but we realized quickly that we were wrong. so once we got to london the thursday before reading fest (which was friday - sunday inclusive) we had to make a mad dash to find rainboots (aka wellies) and ponchos (aka rain macs). but first we had to walk the streets of london with all our bags and meet up with matt to get the tickets. we were soooooo grateful for his willingness to help us out. and after that we stored our bags and made our mad dash. this included a lengthy trip to the world's largest clothing store -- topshop oxford circus -- which ended up having our boots as well as a few cute other things. we also had to get all the cds i promised james, alex, and myself from the hmv. it was a very hectic few hours but we got nearly everything we wanted done. we found no rain ponchos to save our lives so we just hoped and prayed they would be selling them at reading. our last trek before boarding the train to reading was to wagamama for dinner. i randomly selected a location in london that i thought was most convenient and after walking for nearly 15 min to find it from the tube station it was UNDER CONSTRUCTION FOR REMODELING!!!! stacey and i were so angry we wanted to murder. so we got food at the next place possible and finally were on our way to reading. this of couse was complete with retrieving our bags from victoria station, lugging them (literally) around the tube stations until we got to paddington station where we rechecked them into left luggage for the weekend -- minus the stuff we needed for the festival. we boarded a train around 10pm to reading and were ON OUR WAY!!!

once we got to the reading train station we were clueless as to what to do next. we followed the herd (and the sporadic signs) til we met this random boy, gino, who looked to be about 19 and too drunk to figure out his way back to the campsite. so after walking for about 20 min we made it to the campground entrance where gino said he would help us without tent after he reconnected with his group. we thanked him for the offer but declined. we were told the "green" camping area was full and that we should camp in "brown" or "purple." well i wasn't entirely sure what that meant. to me the map of the campgrounds looked like it was one big area sectioned off by color. not until the last nite of the festival did i realize that each color meant an entirely different campground which meant the camping area of reading festival was FUCKING MASSIVE. unbeknownst to us, stacey and i decided to plop our shit down near the aisle walkway area of one camp section. we pitched our tent ridiculously close to this other tent but didn't care because we were very tired and cold. it must have been nearly 1am by the time we figured out how to get rain cover portion of the tent to work and it was definitely in the low 50's temperture-wise. not to mention we were wearing shorts (from when we left madrid that morning). here we are in our newly pitched tent, ready as ever to sleep the first night at reading festival:

we both decided to put on some sleeping pants for the night because it was cold. this seemed to do no good and both of us tossed and turned throughout the night and slept very poorly. we each thought the other slept fine and couldn't understand how that was possible. but when we awoke in the morning to the bright and hot sun (it must have been mid-70's), we found out that neither of us slept well but whenever we woke up in the middle of the night we must have caught the other in a moment of rest. regardless, the first night was rough but it got better from there. the weather was gorgeous the first day when we woke up and we decided we'd wear our shorts and tank tops but bring leggings, long sleeve shirts, and sweaters in our backpacks in case the weather took a turn for the worse. we also opted to wear our wellies because we saw many other girls doing the same and assumed they knew best despite it looking ridiculous. when we finally ready to go we met the men in charge of looking after our camp area -- curtis and earl james. now i'm not sure if earl james' name is earl as in a proper name or earl as in a title of power. either way he was goofy and he took some aerial shots of the campground (he was the guy on the watch tower). here are two stitched together to give you an idea of how big campground "green" was:

and remember, that's just one of like 5 campgrounds. there was green, purple, yellow, brown, and white i think. maybe more. i can't recall.

reading festival is definitely a different beast than many other festivals. at least very different than coachella. aside from the obvious difference of coachella being 2 days and reading being 3, when you first get to coachella the friday night before the festival begins, you stand in a massive line to check in to the campgrounds. they check all of your bags for "objectionable items" and assign you to an area of the campgrounds according to the number of people in your group because each square on the floor is good for 4 people. when people come back from the festival at night most don't do anything except go right to bed. the occasional drink here and there but for the most part u just go back, hang out a bit, and sleep. and on the last night of the festival, at least half the campground leaves that night and heads home. you also have no in and out privileges to the venue during the day and aren't allowed to have alcohol in the campgrounds or make campfires. they are also so afraid of you "hurting" people in the venue that they try and band items which could "hurt" someone. ie, chapfuckingstick. reading is almost nearly the opposite.

at reading you get to the campgrounds and just march right on in. you are supposed to show either your ticket or bracelet to get into the camping area but i specifically recall showing the people my ticket and stacey having to fumble to find hers and them not even checking it. perhaps this is because our american accents threw them off so much that they didn't even notice that she didn't show her ticket and noticed more than i stored my in a "very safe place." ie, my money belt. you are allowed to bring any alcohol you want into the campgrounds and they don't search your bags at all. you can make campfires and are allowed as much camping area as you want. it's basically a first come first served thing. and the later you come, the farther area you camp. ie, purple or yellow or whatever. you are allowed to go in and out of the venue as many times as you want because everyone who camps has a fabric bracelet which they wear all weekend. people throw bottles a the stage and no one cares. people also toss their nearly empty beer cups in the air thusly spraying others with beer. people would seriously ask, "is that beer or rain?" people wander the campgrounds selling you shots of alcohol and they also sell jello shots inside the venue. when peope return from the venue at night they drink a lot more and don't rest til at least 4 or 5am. the campgrounds are noisy to say the least and people go out wandering around meeting others. the last night of the festival most people do not leave but rather see it as a major party time. but i'll get to this later. all in all reading is sort of a down and dirty festival. do as you please and drink heavily. i would say that is the way to live by while at reading. that and don't expect to be clean. they have showers but they are military/gym style. one big room, lots of shower heads, no curtains. this means most people don't shower and most are dirty for at least 4 days. stacey and i didn't shower for 4 days and by the end i'm sure any clean person would be able to smell us a mile away. the toilets also lacked attention for the weekend and by the end they smelled so fowl if you didn't hold your nose you just might puke. the toilets are not the typical individual free-standing kind. (see below, top row, left side) they are banks of toilets. 2 rows back to back with one door per stall. but in the end all the shit and piss dumps into one trough under the bank. it's kind of gross when you think about it. and perhaps the reason why the toilets smell so fucking nasty by the end of the weekend. on the first day as we walked to th venue we saw this string of beer cans. (see below, top row, right side) i couldn't resist snapping a photo. i'd say that's very indicative and telling of reading fest. after walking to the venue and realizing our campground was so close to the entrance, stacey and i parused the various places to buy stuff. they sold EVERYTHING you could need. and at reasonable prices. ponchos (we each bought one for the impending rain), wellies, toilet paper, blankets, sleeping bags, roll mats, etc. everything u could need. not like coachella where they have one kiosk that sells a bit of ice, aspirin, and the like. reading fest is prepared. u can come with nothing and get all that you need. they also had a stand where you could buy a CASE of beer to bring back to your tent in case you didn't bring enough with you or were not willing to make the trek into town for a case. they also had a stand where you could bring your warm, unopened can of carling (the beer that sponsors the festival every year) and walk out with an ice cold can. isn't that NUTS? stacey and i figured this was a good time to get a bite to eat and have our first carling. (see below, second row, left side) we deserved it. we were FINALLY AT READING!!!

the first day we got the hang of it. it was much like coachella. one main stage (see above, second row, right side), one main huge tent, and 3 other smaller tents. the area seemed about the same size or maybe smaller than coachella but felt a lot more crowded. this was because there were way more people at reading than at coachella. people dressed up in costumes even. we saw this all throughout the weekend. people dressed as spiderman, batman, clockwork orange characters, men in dresses, and even a guy in a bear outfit. (see above, 3rd row, left side) the weather liked to change a lot throughout the first day. warm, cloudy, rainy, warm, cloudy, rainy. at the first sign of rain we put our ponchos on. as did others. and we looked soooo spiffy. haha (see below, 3rd row, right side) but it wasn't uncommon for it to rain for like 5 min and then go away. so people would have the ponchos and umbrellas out one min (see above, 4th row, left side) and then back in their bags the next. but at the end of the first night it started to rain really hard and so stacey and i looked ridiculous in the crowd watching franz but we didn't care. at least we weren't wet. (see above, 4th row, right side) the first night it rained a lot overnight but the tent held up. and i didn't mind the rain at all. we both learned our lessons and wore more layers to sleep and were just fine. by morning though there was lots of mud around the campgrounds. but at least the inside of our tent wasn't too wet. there were some puddles and my pillow did get wet. but overall we were fine.

the second day was more of the same. lots of bands. lots of fluctuating weather. and by night's end we really felt like we were in the swing of things. when we got back to our tent we noticed that the little tent that we parked ourselves painfully close to was gone. and this meant we could see our fellow campers next to us. they happened to hear us talking and asked us where we were from. we told them and at that instant our reading festival experience was changed forever. and for the better. the people next to us were 2 brothers, one friend, one girlfriend, and her friend. the ones worth mentioning are liv (short for lawrence), his brother, and dave. liv was 19 and his gf was too much of a prissy girl to accompany him. he'd been going to reading fest for 4 years now and said he'd never met an american there ever. so he was quite excited when he learned that's where we were from. dave was 23 and his gf lived in france. he'd been going to reading for 4 years as well and too had never met an american there. they also had a friend gavin who was meant to camp with them (in the spot where the little tent was pitched and now removed) but got there too late and had to camp in another area. liv and dave were both soo excited when we had set up our tent to terribly close to the other small tent since they were pissed off that that little tent snuck into their "quad" area and took gavin's spot. we all bonded over this and that night stacey and i went out on "wanders" with liv and gavin. we didn't get very far down the campground because we met these girls (all were btwn 16 and 18) who were quite infatuated with our americanness. we ended up hanging out in their tent for at least an hour. then went back to our own tents. we also learned that liv was the guy who the previous night kept saying out loud (while we were sleeping), "oliver, this is a NO shoe tent." it turns out oliver is some kid in a tent a bit down the way. and liv heard someone saying that and kept immitating it all night. so this became our phrase of the weekend. it sounds so much funnier when you hear it in a british accent.

the next morning (the 3rd and final day of the festival) we hung out with the guys at the campground before going into the venue. (see below, left side) they told us they would show us a proper reading festival so we were game. this meant we went into the venue and began drinking immediately. stacey took to this well and definitely had more pints than i did. oh yes, a pint of carling ran btwn 2GBP and 2.60GBP depending on how many you bought at once. they had these carriers that would allow you to carry 4 at a time. they came in handy that day. i only had a few beers because drinking during the day doesn't settle well with me and just makes me sleepy. but stacey really went at it and drank a decent amount. by nightfall she and the boys were sufficiently tipsy and we closed out the night leaving the venue a bit before the last acts ended. we got back to the campgrounds and drank more around the campfire before setting out on proper "wanders." liv and dave told us that the last night the campgrounds go CRAZY and people just go nuts walking around drunk meeting people and whatnot. so we were ready. we geared up for the fact that we were going to stay up all night and then just break down the tent really early and go to the train station to make our way back home. so we were ready for a long night ahead of us.

around 12:30 we set out on wanders. it was stacey and i in our boots and PJ pants along with liv carrying at least a couple beers and dave wearing his kilt. we wandered around saying hi to random strangers declaring "reading love, reading love" while hugging them. we saw a few gas canisters get lit and blow up. we saw people monitoring the campgrounds put out said fires. and this was in the first campground -- our campground. by the end of the night we had walked through at least 3 more campgrounds. we saw people carrying little trees around and people chanting "tree tree tree." we got invited to play on a trampoline. yes, a trampoline. i'm not sure how the group got that thing in but they did. it was full size and looked like it was going to topple over from all the people on it. we were invited to sit down on this guy's lap and stack seat ourselves to the point where the last person could barely sit and fell over making the whole stack of people fall over. we met several people who asked "where are you guys from?" and then we'd say "america" and they'd say "no shit. with those accents?!" we had people sing the "california" song by phantom planet to us. we saw a boy about the age of 16 come up to dave and say "oh my god. are you wearing a kilt? i love kilts. i'm scottish." it was the cutest thing ever. we were offered the chance to do a beer bong but then were told not to by the security monitoring the grounds. we walked so far we made it to this outside dance area complete with music and people walking around saying "why aren't you dancing? i wanna see dancing!" this was of course next to the tent where they served food 24 hrs because we all know dancing and drinking means you are going to get hungry. this was about the furthest we walked before it started to rain. but we had to walk all the way back and in the rain. that was NOT fun and by the time we got back (we got lost a bit because the campgrounds are large and confusing and people are crazy and making huge ruckuses). we even saw people holding a canopy over their heads as they all walked in unison and tried to keep from getting rained on. it was nearly 4am and we were wet all over. this is where i think i began to get sick. the 4 of us piled into our tent and i set an alarm for 4:30am to wake up so we could break down the tent and make out way to the train station to get on an early train back to london. well dave and i fell asleep right away and stacey and liv didn't. they apparently heard the alarm go off while dave and i didn't. they decided this was their cue to go to liv's small ass tent and make out there. i finally woke up at 5:45am wondering what was going on in my confused blurry-eyed state. then i realized that stacey was with liv and i had to make a plan. so i packed up everything i could, woke up dave, said goodbye to him. went to the bathroom, brushed my teeth, then got stacey out of the tent and we proceeded to break down the tent. only the tent was wet as hell. so in the end we left it there because they recycle the tents. we figured at least it would get some good use somewhere. at this point we said our goodbyes to liv who was half awake in his tent (see above, right side). we thanked him for making our reading festival amazing and true to form. then we walked out of the campgrounds sad we were leaving and tired as fuck. we made it to the street and saw taxis so we took one to the train station because it was well worth paying 8GBP with tip vs walking 20 min in our tired state. we also got to the station much faster than other people so we could beat the rush that was about to occur. it was clear that the town of reading really gears up for the festival. the station had rails out for when the queues would start forming later in the day as people would be jamming themselves onto any train possible just to get home. also on the second day we walked into town before going into the venue and the town was just PACKED with festival-goers stocking up on more beer, getting food to eat, using proper bathrooms, just everything. the town was just full of young people. anyway, we got on the first train to london and when we arrived at paddington station the first thing we did was shower.

and boy was that shower good. we each had our own little stall. the stall was complete with shower, sink, and toilet. i laid out all my shit, got undressed, and proceeded to take the best cold shower of my life. i really washed that stank away. and then we got some food, got our bags from left luggage, and took the train to the airport. and that my friends, is the ROAD TO READING AND BACK.

coachella will never be the same again.

and now for a breakdown of the bands...the only band i really wanted to see but couldn't due to overlap was the raconteurs. all the other bands i wanted to see i got to see basically. i felt like there was less conflict for me this time than there usually is at coachella. but this is also due to the fact that i've seen a lot of the bands on the reading lineup and therefore if i missed one i had seen before it wasn't the end of the world.

:: FRIDAY ::

fields
i had no idea who they were but we randomly caught them early in the day. they were a good, mellow british band. i have to get their EP when i get around to it.

the long blondes
veyr fun! i love the mp3s i have of them and i was so glad i got to see them in the UK. the lead singer is this cute girl who likes to dance around. definitely a good show. if they come to america i'll be sure to see them.

the guillemots
i've only ever seen them one other time and that was at the hotel cafe in LA which is about twice the size of my living room. the stage was so small they couldn't really do much. the crowd was intimate and the setting was not condusive for any sort of hardcore rocking out. at least not in my opinion. therefore the show felt very subdued. which i was ok with. but when they played at reading it was like a whole new level. so much energy. it was great. people were really into it too. i just wished they had played some of the slower more beautiful tracks. that would have been really nice. oh well.

panic! at the disco
big OOPS on my part. so ok. i admit this is a stupid mistake by i confused the band panic! at the disco with the song "danger! high voltage!" from electric 6. how i confused this i am not certain beyond the fact that both the song and the band have exclamation points in what i consider to be weird places. so when i saw panic! on stage i was baffled as to why they sounded NOTHING like the song i knew. haha big mistake. BIG mistake. i later learned that if i had gotten to their set when it started i could have seen the lead singer get pelted with a bottle and unable to sing for like 5 minutes.

the subways
they look like a small band on stage but you can tell that they like to rock out hard. perhaps the main stage was inappropriate for them. but either way i enjoyed it.

peaches
peaches peaches peaches. peaches for me. hmm or maybe not. she's a weird one that girl. i saw her back in 04 i think it was. she was really weird. and she hasn't changed much. i feel like karen o from the YYY's is copying her weird schtict. anyway, she was alright. i don't like her much because she is so strange. but some of her songs are fun. she had a giant penis on stage. i mean that's pretty awesome in it's own weird way.

the sunshine underground
one of my most anticipated bands to see at the fest, this manchester band didn't disappoint. save the fact that they didn't play the one song i wanted to hear. they were solid thru and thru for the small band that they are. dance rock with lots of cow bell and high hats. good stuff.

belle & sebastian
i love this band and their audience participation antics. they felt so far away (maybe because they were literally very far away). like their set felt a bit distant. maybe they are tired. it seemed like their acts were too rehearsed and run thru. but the music was good as usual at least.

yeah yeah yeahs
i have a love/hate relationship with this band. i loved their first album and thought their second was subpar. not nearly as gutsy and rockin. furthermore i HATE their live show. i've now seen them twice and both times karen o is just too fuckin weird for me. so i've decided i'm done with this band's live shows.

kaiser chiefs
man is it weird to see a band that is so small in the US i saw them at cinespace with no one even paying attention. then to see them play second to last on the main stage at reading with like at least 80,000 people cheering them on. i mean good fucking god. so different. they really throw it out there i have to say. i don't love them but i do appreciate their musical efforts.

franz ferdinand
they pulled out ALL the stops. i saw them play fairly late in the night at coachella this year but they headlined reading and wow. i mean they had these huge female robots with heads that were strobe lights and their legs moved back and forth kicking like rockette girls. their songs sounded better than coachella. i think the lead singer's voice was better this time.

:: SATURDAY ::

giant drag
she played coachella and i missed her. not that i really cared that much but i did. so this time i caught her show and it was alright. she's got a whiny voice that i don't really like. the best thing about the show was when she said, "so i came to reading 4 years ago because my ex-boyfriend's band was playing and i was standing in the crowd watching. my dream was to play this stage myself. and now here i am. playing this stage and selling more records than his band ever did!!!"

wolfmother
i remember getting their EP before any of my friends and thinking, this music is crap. it's 70's rock imitation. but i will concede that live they sound much better. the lead singer has jack white undertones i feel and overalll they rock out more than their album lets on.

tilly & the wall
i had never heard of this band but james said that they had a tapdancer so i had to see for myself. sure enough there is a girl on stage tapping away as part of the music. like she's not just there for show. she's there for musical interjection. it's quite odd. but fun.

the futureheads
as usual this band rocks out hard and the crowd only mildly appreciates it. they are so loud and engaging and the audience always just sort of falls short. never participates. it's sad really.

dirty pretty things
i just had to check out the otherspin off project that has resulted from the breakdown of the libertines. we all know pete doherty has brainwashed kate moss into loving his wretched self and can't ever make an appearance with his new band babyshambles because he's so coked up. so i thought maybe the other guy's band might pull thru. well, not really. they seem very very cocky as i expected. very liam from oasis. the music is ok but it's just sorta weird-sauce version of the libertines.

spinto band
they are cute and bouncy on stage. just as i would suspect. but it's also just sort of typical indie rock. nothing too special.

feeder
it's funny because i saw this band play in manchester back when i was living in england. i saw them alone and in a small venue. i sort of forgot about them but i guess they are still big in the UK. i didn't know a lot of the songs but i liked what i heard.

clap your hands say yeah
i went with stacey so she could hear the last song. no further comment as if u know me, u know how i feel about this band.

jet
they rock out hard and look good doing it.

tv on the radio
probably the best band i saw the whole weekend. so fucking good. SOOO fucking good. the crowd was into it and they sounded amazing. it was the smallest tent too so we were really close.

artic monkeys
i happened to catch the last few songs because i was watching for muse and they are so mediocre it's not even funny. i heard that the previous year they played in the small tent in the middle of the day. somehow they blew the fuck up and everyone loves them. but their music is so boring. it's nothing new. i can't get into it. PLUS they are kids. like 18 years old or something.

muse
i want to say all positive things about this show because i love muse's live performances but i can't. i've never seen them headline such a massive stage and i didn't know what to expect. but boy did they pull out ALL the stops. big ass lights. lcd screens. fireworks. fire explosions. i mean everything really. the music sounded amazing as always but i wanted more. i wanted more interaction. to make it feel like we were in it together. not me watching them. they barely talked to the crowd and it felt very very rehearsed. which, granted, is necessary since THE man of the hour plays so many instruments that they can't help but pre-record things. and that means they can't really divert from that rendition. but still. i wanted more. i wanted to see him play the piano more because it's so beautiful. but he barely played at all. most of that was pre-recorded.

:: SUNDAY ::

taking back sunday
i will admit i used to like this band. years ago. when they first started and i was into that emo rock shit. but now it's just unbearable. but sunday's lineup was the poorest of them all so i basically was just killing time.

less than jake
again i say, the lineup was bad. LTJ were big years ago in america. why the fuck are they playing reading now? its mindboggling really.

good shoes
decent, poppy, indie band. james tipped me off to them and they didn't disappoint. i wish i was more familiar with them so that the songs would mean more to me when i watched them.

slayer
not to be a broken record but yea. sunday was all about the random punk bands and wannabe punk bands. at least it was slayer. i can say i saw slayer. i didn't like it. but i can say i saw it.

broken social scene
so many instruments!! but not the way arcade fire is. BSS doesn't overwhelm you with their music. but they did sound really rich with all those instruments. and not monetarily rich. because i'm sure they don't pull in the big bucks. but musically rich in sound. good show.

my chemical romance
i reluctantly watched this band (due to the lineup and our new brit friends wanted to just kick it outside). and part of me is glad i saw it. not because the music was good. because, well, it SUCKED. but because i can now say i've seen this band live, the lead singer is a total asswipe, and their fans are followers. i don't care if they stated very clearly that they weren't and that the daily mailarticle saying such was wrong. because the article was right. and "helena" is not a good song. i don't get why everyone i know likes it.

placebo
the band i wanted to see the most at reading. not because i love love love placebo, but because i figured i'd never get to see them again and would never pay to see them even if they did actually come to america. i was slightly disappointed in the performance only because the lead singer's (brian) guitar broke like 3 songs into the set and they had to leave the stage to fix it. therefore there was no music for about 10 minutes. in the meantime the cameramen decided to film the lovely ladies on top of men's shoulders while the audience coerced them into showing their titties. it was funny for about 3 min. then it got old. when the band came back i felt like they had to rush thru their set. i will say that they played a lot of songs i love and songs i would never have expected them to play includng their beautiful cover of the kate bush song, "running up that hill." i also wished that brian hadn't shaved his head making him look like a cancer patient (or michael stipe) and that he wore more outlandish clothing. but oh well. can't have it all.

pearl jam
so i don't love pearl jam. not like some people my age do. but i wanted to see them because they are THE pearl jam. but shit man, they gave me nothing to listen to. their enthusiasm waned i felt and when i finally decided to say fuck it and go to the dance tent, i nearly forgot they were even on stage. that's not supposed to happen. this is reading. this is the last night. this is the main stage. this is the last band. people can't forget u are playing!!! but yet i did. i will admit that when i heard "alive" in their encore from far away, it sounded really good. but too good too late. i was already back at the camp.

2 many dj's
i saw them at coachella the first year i went and i missed most of their set because they interfered with other bands i wanted to see. but shit they were good then. mashing up all the favorites. i didn't want to leave. this time they didn't mash songs i knew. so while it was nice and danceable, it wasn't what i expected. so sad.

and that's the reading festival recap. damn that took ages to type out.

09.04.2006

one week later and i'm still sick. reading just kicked my ass. i may have to go to the doctor. i'm starting to wonder if i have some sort of infection. who knows. anyway, i wanted to post about the trip and not bore you to death. so i'm going to break it up into two posts. one about spain and one about reading. reading will come later. still working on getting photos from one guy we met there cuz he took photos from the last night which was the crazy night. so here is my bit about our spain trip. with photos to break it up and make it more interesting...

once we got over all the airport mayhem (seriously the gueues at gatwick were INSANE), we finally arrived in barcelona a day after we left. we stayed at this really awesome hostel that was more like a hotel. really clean and nice. people were friendly and it was in a good area. very convenient to walk to most sites. after a good nite's rest we were ready to go and went to the casa batllo which is this awesome building designed by gaudi.

look how nuts it looks. all the curves. all the tile. i think it was my favorite building in barcelona. after that we went to park guell. also designed by gaudi. it's famous for the bench seats that surround the entire top area of the park. the park is huge and separated into various parts but the main focus is the "entrance"(?) where there is a fountain and pillars and whatnot. so fucking awesome. we spent a bit of time there just wandering around.

then we went to la sagara familla which is gaudi's piece de resistance. though honestly not that exciting. it's not finished after over 100 years of construction. the facade is amazing. the pillars and all. but it's just boring. there isn't much to see. you go in and it's like...more scaffolding.

oh and it's worth mentioning that i bought these little "timetags" to wear on the trip. one for each of us. just so we wouldn't have to deal with watches and tanlines. well i lost mine immediately. it fellt off my beltloop somewhere in the airport so stacey wore hers on her tank top everyday. it was hilarious. everytime i wanted to know what time it was i would ask and she would do excactly what she's doing in the photo above. oh timetag, you served us well.

after our "gaudi day" we went to the hostel to siesta. then we woke up at like 10:30pm and went to this AMAZING tapas place. the guy at the hostel recommended and i'm so glad he did. holy hell the food was so fucking good. and we had this beer called damm limon which is like a light beer with a lemon flavor. sooo tasty. stacey was obsessed.

the next day we ventured out to the modern art museum where they had some interesting exhibits. the most interesting being this one on vinyl records. i love music so an exhibit dedicated to it is fine by me. then we wandered the streets for a long while. went down las ramblas (the famous street in barcelona where they have street performers and the like). we went into the mercat de barcelona which is basically this huge outdoor market where they sell meat, fruits, veggies, grains, etc. it's so hectic in there but fun to look at.

then we made our way over to the picasso musuem which is down this really narrow street and very unassuming. i liked how the streets in barcelona were so cute and quaint and narrow. the musuem was very peaceful which was a nice change of pace in the way of musuems. i think it had to do with all the stone the building was made out of and the airyness of it. we spent a decent amont of time there. then we made out way over to the montjuic park area where we went to the poble espanyol. this little manmade artist's community that's made to look like a village. it's interesting. we got there a bit late so a lot of the shops were closed so we couldn't see all the arts and crafts. but we enjoyed it. we had tapas there for dinner before checking out the fountain show in front of this massive musuem. it seems like a lot of people in barcelona go to this fountain show. because the area was jampacked when we got there. the fountain show was decent. it was more pretty than anything. the metro was super crowded afterwards which was a drag but oh well.

the next day we set out for the train station to take our 8 hour train to bilbao. such a drag that we couldn't get a night train but stacey and i managed to finish our books on the train if nothing else. i find trains very relaxing but i hate the idea of wasting so much time. goddamn you bilbao. if you didn't have the guggenheim i wouldn't have even bothered! when we got to bilbao (night time) it was really crowded outside the train station. we had no idea why but we saw people wearing these blue hankerchiefs everywhere.

we made our way to our hostel and realized that there was a weeklong festival going on that we arrived in the middle of. we still don't know what it was about (people in bilbao don't really speak english anywhere) but it sure did get the city lively at night for the nights we saw.

the next morning we set out for the guggenheim. i looked on the map of bilbao and realized that taking the metro would be lame because the city is so freakin small. in fact everywhere we went we mostly walked. in barcelona and madrid. because that way we could see a lot of the city. only if were in a time crunch or really far from something did we take the metro. so we walked to the guggenheim soaking up the bilbao atmosphere. the weather was quite nice. pleasant. barcelona was a bit hot. but temperate. i would say bilbao was even more temperate. madrid was just fucking hot as hell. once we got to the guggenheim it didn't cease to amaze me. i was worried it might fall short because the guggenheim in NYC certainly did. but no no. this place was goddamn amazing. inside and out. they had this really awesome permanent exhibit with rusted steel figures. it's hard to explain but when you walk through it your perception of the walls alter depending on which one you are walking through. it was really cool. and they had this exhibit on russian art spanning like five centuries. i'm not a big fan of russian art but i think seeing any cultures art over such a large span of time is really interesting because you can see the progression and how politics alter the art and whatnot. so very cool indeed.

after the guggenheim we walked around some more and went to the "old town" area of bilbao. again, more narrow, winding streets. this area was near where the festival stuff was taking place. so once it hit about 6pm the streets were buzzing. we had dinner over there and then took advantage of the carnival-like atmosphere and indulged in the most amazing churros i've ever had in my life. they were huge and stuffed. i got one stuffed with yellow creme and covered with chocolate on the outside. stacey got one stuffed with chocolate. i couldn't eat it all. it was too rich. but oh so tasty. then we went to the train station and waited for our overnight train.

stacey had never ridden an overnight train before so we was excited. i was excited to see what a first class 2-person cabin looked like. because rick and i always took 2nd class 6 person cabins. we were gonna do a 4 person but it was sold out. so we were forced to do a 2 person. and it was nice. very spacious all things considering. i slept decently well and when we arrived in madrid the next morning i was ready to go! we went to our hostel and put our stuff down before exploring the city. we walked to the plaza del sol which was supposed to be all nice and famous. km 0 it's called and it's the centre point. well there was a shitload of construction so to us it looked like a messy instersection. so sad. we got a bite to eat there before continuing on to the plaza mayor which was just this wide open plaza. it reminded me of the square in venice with all the pigeons. only the square in venice had more flair and more character. then we went hunting down this churro place. it was so fucking hard to find cuz it was literally in this alleyway and that's hard to find on a map. but we found it eventually and it was so cute and awesome. they pretty much just serve churros with dipping chocolate. the churros were good but not like the ones we had in bilbao. after that we continued walking towards the prado musuem. we stopped at the post office (see below, 1st row right side photo) which was probably one of the more extravagent post office's i've ever seen. granted it's the main post office and there are surely other things inside the building but it was pretty damn big. stacey was in disbelief of it all. i was not because i've seen other post offices like that in various countries. that's just how they roll outside the U.S.

after that we finally made our way to the prado (see above, 2nd row left side photo). one of those musuems where if you don't go people will scold you for it yet you really don't like most of the art inside. sort of like the louvre. don't get me wrong. the louvre is one of the most impressive musuems i've ever seen with it's massive building full of some of the most famous paintings in the world. hell i've been there 3 separate times. but at the end of the day i really don't like most of the art. it's all very old and just not my style. well the prado was the same for me. very old art. not my thing. stacey agreed. so we breezed through it. and (un)lucky for us, the exhibition at the time was...ding ding ding...picasso. meh. we just saw a whole musuem of his stuff. i couldn't be bothered to shell out another 7 euros and stand in the long ass line. so onward we went. to the retiro park which was huge. we only saw a bit of it because it was midday and walking around in the blistering heat was not that exciting to us. so we went back to the hostel to regroup. we met these two australian girls who wanted to see a flamenco show just like us. so we decided to go together. so that night we went to casa patas for the flamenco show. the music was great and the dancing was quite impressive. but there was this man. this little spanish man who spoke not a word of english. he seated us and kept reassuring us that they were good seats. mejor! mejor! we thought it was cute (in that old person way) and so we decided to take a photo of him. well he thought that was his cue to woo us or something. so when the show was over he took a photo with us (see above, 2nd row right side photo) and had someone from the restaurant translate to us that he wanted to take us all out for drinks. we politely declined after he insisted a few times. then we said goodbye and literally ran to the metro so he wouldn't follow us. nice man. maybe a little TOO nice....

the next day stacey and i checked out of the hostel and into the most amazing and awesome hotel i've ever stayed at in my life. i've made a habit of bookmarking all the extravagent and artistic hotels in the world that appeal to me as i find them. there are a few other MUST SEES in the world but at least i ticked this one off the list.

hotel puerta america madrid

12 floors. all designed by a different artist/architect. all fucking amazing. i wanted to stay in them all!! but of course we couldn't. so i opted for the 7th floor based on the photos i saw of the rooms. it looked the most intriguing inside and out. the bathroom area had to sinks on either side of the shower in the middle. (see above, 1st row right side and 2nd row right side) the toilet was inside this little capsule thing. the bed was round and faced a drop down projection tv. it was just insane. even the hallway of the floor (see above 2nd row left side) looked space-agey. a couple of the other crazy floors included the 4th floor that was made of all these weird metal angles (see above 3rd row). the left image is taken when you exit the elevator. you can see a glimpse of the hallway. the right image is of one of the hallways. it was probably the most disconcerting floor to be on. it took awhile to get used to looking at it. it was almost like a funhouse mirror room. the 1st floor was very spacey looking too (see above 4th row left image) and the 2nd floor as well. but for different reasons. but this folks, is where i broke my camera. while taking photos of the various floors of the building i slipped and fell and broke my camera. so after getting thru about half the building i had to stop. i bruised my hip badly and it was hard to walk for a day. my shoulder also hurt a lot. but we had to move on! so we got some disposables and moved on. we went to the bullfighting ring although we couldn't see a bullfight because they only occur on sundays during this time of year. poo. i wanted to see one. though i probably would have had to leave halfway thru because it's so gruesome. we also saw the atocha train station because it's famous for it's "botanical garden" feel inside. and yes there are a lot of plants. it was very beautiful. across the street from that was the reina sofia musuem. madrid's modern art musuem. they also had a picasso exhibit. what's with all the picasso?!?! the musuem was cool though. it's got an old and new part. the old part houses the permanent collection which is quite decent. the new part houses the changing exhibitions. very cool. we spent a decent amount of time there. then we got some dinner and went back to the (amazing) hotel to relax because the next day we had to wake up early and take a plane to london. then start the whirlwind "roading to reading" as i am now calling it. which i will recount in another post.
