i just bought this print. it's an original but not poster size. i found it poster size (35"x50") on this one particular site that specializes in vintage international posters from all the greater designers. but that original poster print was $1500!!!! and as much as i love it, i can't afford that. this print is ad size. it's 11"x15" and it was $80. it's an original and it's worth it. the designer who did this is herbert leupin. he's a famous swiss designer who did a lot of "object posters" also known as sachplakats. they were very minimalist and the objects were depicted very starkly as possible with clear typography. i LOVE these types of posters. they are so cool looking. in one of my design classes i had to do an object poster. it was an arduous task but well worth it. i bought this poster because not only do i love the simple image of the old typewriter as well as the bold yellow color, but it represents a part of alex and a part of me. alex for his love of writing and me for my love of swiss minimalist design. it will look great in our new apt. anyway, today has been super super lax. i did something when i first got into the office and then after that it's been 7 hrs of NOTHING. so that's when i took the time to find this poster and whatnot. this weekend looks like it'll be good. going to see grizzly bear at the disney concert hall tomorrow night and then supporting jen at the marathon on sunday. mixed in with getting some boxes for packing small stuff in my room and doing some freelance work. good times. well not the packing part. cuz that sucks. but the rest. 02.25.2008
i just have to start the day off with this. the nubrella. it won't pop open and it's going to protect you from rain. i swear it looks like a made up product but it's not! i found it on daily candy. it's $60. i want it but i don't think i need it for $60. it's LA for crying out loud. but it looks so funny. like a funny japanese invention. like a bubble helmet for space or something. i just love it! anyway.... the weekend was splendid. just splendid. crazy busy but splendid. still figuring out new apartment shit. gotta wait and see what pans out. but on saturday i went down to the LBC to hang out with former AA people at laurel's house. first of all, what a cute house! i've seen it in photos but now i've seen the real deal. so cute. lots of fun things in that house. they have impeccable taste. and due to jeff having to work all day, laurel had to take over making the chili. i was hesitant at first considering laurel eats lean cuisines and uses plastic plates and forks. haha but she pulled that shit off with flying colors. the chili was GREAT and the honey cornbread and blue cheese butter spread was just awesome. so kudos to her for doing a great great job! hanging out with the old peeps was fun too. just shooting the shit over some beers for hours. quite good times. very laid back. but one thing got me riled up.... so back in the good old days of AA all factory employees were allowed to purchase non "store only" items at wholesale prices. ie, a t-shirt was like $3.50. and that was how i got SOOO many clothes for so long. and then you could get 50% off store only items. well..... (moment of silence for this) DOV stopped the orders! NO MORE WHOLESALE ORDERS FOR EMPLOYEES! and no warning. just apparently one day someone tried and the reps said "nope, can't do it anymore." no one last order. NOTHING. isn't that a bloody fucking shame?!?!?!? i'm outraged and i don't even work there anymore. what an asswipe that man is. UGH. i can't get started or i'll never stop, but goddamn that makes me angry. ever so angry. sunday was work day slash oscar-watching day. i managed to do both with some success and not be entirely exhausted this morning. so that's good. and tonight i'm supposed to meet this girl about a website. an easy one i think. i hope. oh and one last thing. so last night alex and i were watching seinfeld season 1 i think and "the busboy" ep was next. if you don't know that one i'm not going to explain. but there was this scene with elaine in her nightgown with this guy. OH MY FUCKING GOD. PRICELESS. seriously, PRICELESS. i was in stitches. i watched it twice and i was laughing so hard i was crying. i swear i haven't seen such comic genius like that in ages. WOW. i loved that scene. i could watch it over and over. i can't find a clip online to show but it's just hilarious. 02.20.2008
i'm so tired that this entry is not going to receive the attention it deserves. but it's already wednesday and i'm writing about the long weekend which was 2 days ago! anyway so i went to vegas this past weekend. alex and i drove there friday night after work and got in around 2am. we then returned monday afternoon leaving vegas around 4pm. the weekend was marvelous. alex's parents met us there and we stayed in adjoining rooms at the wynn hotel. it's the newest major hotel on the strip and it's SO NICE. it's like expensive type nice. not hip. but fancy. marble all over the place. it's as nice as the bellagio except it's technically nicer since it got the mobil 5 star, the AAA 5 diamond, and the michelin 5 red pavilions. it's the only on the strip to garner such accolades. anyway, it's nice. plain and simple. and it's near the venetian. so it's sort of 3/4 the way down the strip i'd say. saturday we went out and walked down about the half the strip checking out the various hotels and shops. fun and weird. vegas is so weird to me. so weird. anyway, we had dinner at this AWESOME thai place off the strip called lotus of siam. seriously, bomb ass shit. yes, i said "bomb ass shit." cuz it is. it rivals thai tom's and we all know how i feel about thai tom's!!! the waitress really helped us get the right dishes to compliment each other. it was just so damned good. then we went back to the hotel for dessert and then to change and head out to see cirque du soleil's "love" show. because the taxi long was SOOO long we had to walk to the mirage and we had 30 min to do it. ordinarily that wouldn't be so bad given it's not THAT much of a walk. but i was wearing heels AND the way the strip is built, you are forced to walk like twice as much going up and down escalators and through hotels. it's just awful. so anyway, we got to the show just barely on time and MAN was it a good show. holy HELL! it was gorgeous. not a lot of acrobats but awesome music and awesome dancing. lovely props. the whole show was phenomenal. my favorite part was when they played "something" and there were 4 ladies swinging from various swing/acrobatic contraptions. 4 corners of a square. and a guy in the middle. the women would each swing to him gracefully and sort of taunt him. it's really hard to explain but it was soooo beautiful. i wanted to cry it was so beautiful! after the show, alex and i went down to gamble a bit while his parents went to bed. sunday we parused the rest of the strip during the day. i have to say, i HATE new york, new york hotel. it's so fucking ugly and dingey looking. much like new york itself! haha man it was ugly. ugh. i hate it. anyway, we had to have an early dinner cuz we were seeing the 7:30 show of "O" so we got back to the hotel and got ready for dinner at 5:30pm. it's like old folks dinner time! hahaha we at one of the many restaurants in the hotel. it was tasty. not much to speak of other than the amazing pumpkin soup. just superb! then we headed over to see "O" at the bellagio. "O" is very different from "love" because "O" is like a traditional cirque show. a lot of acrobats. except this one is set to water. the stage rises and falls and water pours in and out accordingly. it's really amazing. and the acrobats were cool. this was the type of cirque show i really wanted to see. "love" was just so much fun because i love the beatles and it's really colorful and exciting but "O" is just gorgeous and breathtaking. again, hard to describe. just see it for yourself. man o man. after the show we went to gamble a bit while alex's parents went back to the room. monday, his parents left and flew back home. we hung around and got a late breakfast. gambled a bit. went to a few stores. then headed back to LA around 4pm. traffic was crap so we got back late. but all in all a great weekend. i wish i had the energy to write more detail. i'm just so fucking tired. because i played all weekend, i had to work a LOT last night. and i'm too tired to even get into all of that. but suffice is to say, i'm exhausted. 02.11.2008
so the grumblings have been in place for awhile but i think it's nearly official.... orange:house is getting a divorce..... [moment of silence] yes, it is true. after 7 long, happy, and prosperous years in 2 different houses, the gang has decided to break apart. i say it's nearly official because we have yet to have a proper in-person discussion about it all. we've just been emailing back and forth which is no way to deal with such an important issue. yet we haven't found a day when we are all free. it's quite sad really. at first i was excited with the prospect of a new apt with new furniture and all that. and now i'm just sad. i've lived in this house for 5 years which is like the 2nd longest amount of time i've lived somewhere aside from my home home. and even though it's messy as shit, i love it in it's own way. the end of an era is coming and it's not happy times. michael was the one to initially commit to moving out on his own and then alex asked me if i wanted to get a place with him and being that michael commited to moving out, i thought it would be best to just leave my house while it was still all original members rather than try and fill the void. so i think alex and i will be moving in together. it's a scary idea but i've talked with many people and i'm willing to take the risk. scary....risky....these are words in my mind not because i don't love being with alex but because it's that "next step" idea. that much closer to permanence....marriage. all that shit that scares me greatly. but you'll never know til you try. anyway, 7 yrs is commonlaw marriage and i said we'd have some big "wedding" themed party but who knows. our lease ends like a few days after my birthday and a few before coachella. quite possibly THE worst time for a lease to end in my life. so i don't know if i'll have the energy to party. we'll see. for now it's just sadness.... 02.05.2008
I WANT THIS RING. NOW. it's so awesome. it's like a wedding ring but totally not. the oxidized silver and the inverted diamond. complete awesomeness if i ever saw it.
well, before i get on talking about my fantastic NYC trip and how i'm sick sick sick, i must say first and foremost, if you haven't already voted today, GO OUT AND MAKE SURE YOU VOTE!!! unless of course you live in a state that isn't voting today. then by all means, carry on. but vote when your day arrives! i already went out and voted this morning before work. i won't get into who i voted for since i'm not one to preach and to be honest, i didn't really make up my mind til this morning. and even still, either candidate for me would be great. obama or clinton that is. fuck the repubs. haha anyway.... after my voting stint i was hit with a massive amount of traffic as i approached the 101. turns out there was a multi-car accident and all but one lane was blocked make the caheunga pass and the 101 a bloody nightmare. i'm convinced it was the OBAMA sign that was on the overpass right nearby. i mean the sign was HUGE and i bet everyone was looking at it and some people weren't paying attention to the road as well and BAM. big accident. anyway, my weekend in NYC was awesome. it wasn't terribly exciting or eventful being that i've been to NYC before and i had no desire to see anything specific. i've seen all the touristy things and there was no time to think about if there was a broadway show or a museum to catch. i didn't even look for fear of tempt. i just wanted to go and have a nice long weekend hanging out with kyla and jason and anyone else who might happen to pop by. the weekend consisted of things like going to muji where they still didn't have the nail clipper i wanted. strolling around brooklyn going in and out of stores and getting coffee for free from this nice new coffee shop. eating pizza, going to an AA store, battling rain and wind but no temps below 30 degrees. funny face masks, sulfuric farts, drinking buckets of hot water to soothe my sore throat due to my ever-so-timely cold. and of course drinking. actually a few things need expansion. one being this one bar we tried to go to. it's called PDT which stands for "please don't tell" and it's this hidden bar that got some press recently so now it's super busy and crowded. it's in the east village and you go into this hot dog shop which is just under street level. down in the shop there is a phone booth. you go in there and pick up the phone and the other wall of the booth slides open and a woman greets you. that's the bar. however it's so small and was so crowded the night we went that we didn't get in. we put down our number and they called at like 2:30am. even though that's not late in the bar world in NYC, i was feeling sick and we were over the whole thing. so we went home. another thing that makes for a good story is the last night i was there. we went to get falafel/schwarma sandwiches and brought them back to the apt. later that night we decided to go out to a bar down the street to get some beers and dessert. one of us (i won't say who for embarassment sake. haha) had a lot of gas and farted it all out right before we got to the bar. so much so that the rest of us could smell it and it was not pretty. a man walks up to the bar as we are standing off to the side to let the smell die out. the man says loudly "OH MAN. do you smell that? MAN....oooooh, that smells bad. ooooh. DAMN that's a lot of sulfur...." oh my god we were laughing SOOOOO HARD. it was fucking hilarious. such a great moment. we tried to go to the bar but it was too packed so we got pie, ice cream, and beer at the local market and took it back to the apt. such a fun night. on the plane ride back i had obnoxious sinus problems which made the 6+ hour ride more unbearable than usual. at least the turbulence wasn't too bad. the superbowl was on during the entire flight but not broadcast on any of the channels virgin america gets. sad. i saw the highlights on ESPN and the damned giants. i just knew it. i KNEW IT. i should have bet money. those fuckers always ruin shit for people. like the year when they ruined the 49ers' chance for going to 3 superbowls in a row where we would have won that shit and had a record 3peat. ugh! i'll never forget that. NEVER!!!! goddamn giants....
